The Point

The Art of Receiving
It is all available to you in this moment simply by being open to receiving

Intervention Skill

For most people giving is much easier than receiving.  Our high need for control and power makes it tough to receive.

Do we breathe because we feel entitled or do the lungs open up, trusting and allowing the oxygen to flow in?  The lungs simply invite oxygen into every cell, purifying the blood to keep the body alive and healthy.

When we block ourselves from receiving we resist the flow of life.  The block is caused by a lack of trust and the inability to be open and humble.  As we block the fullness of our breath, we say ‘no’ to the essentials of life force energy.

Application

Receiving does not equate to taking, as taking carries a subtle force of obtaining, acquiring or seizing.  Receiving does not equate to expectation, as it carries an undertone of need, righteousness or entitlement.  Receiving is being open to what is with gratitude, humility and trust.

Nature is an eco-system, interacting and functioning as a whole.  Only humans pride themselves as self-sufficient.  Whether we know it or not, we have bought into the illusion of self-sufficiency.
Self-sufficiency shows up in attitudes.  Self sufficient students ask questions to prove a point vs. seek wisdom.  Self sufficient managers look down upon their subordinates vs. seek to gain their trust.  Self sufficient leaders think of personal gain vs. owning responsibility for the entire organization or community.  Self sufficient parents control their children vs. allowing them to blossom.

Are we righteously expecting the Sun to shine or do we open up to receiving the light with humility and gratitude?
Look around you and name one object or person in your environment that you created single handedly in a complete self-sufficient manner.  Now be careful on how you draw your conclusions.  Nothing comes to fruition without numerous hands integrated in a process called web-strings.  (for additional information on Webstrings, please refer to Dr. Cohen’s work*) The web-strings of life are where everything and everyone is inter-connected.  They are transparent to our limited sense of perception, for example the chair you are sitting on was once a tree.  Through practice of conscious awareness and reconnecting with all our senses, the web-strings become apparent and whole.

As we begin to experience the wholeness, ah at last we do arrive.  We become the sum total of all that exists.  Each string is invaluable.  All things become the interplay of existence.  The interplay between a manager and subordinate; parent and child; student and teacher; leader and follower becomes symbiotic with a rhythm that celebrates the interconnectedness.  Furthermore, both joy and pain is seen as an integral pattern woven together to give color, meaning, richness and depth to life.  Being open and embracing every experience, the good, the bad and the ugly is at the root of receiving.

Action

Begin by a simple yet profound 5 minute morning practice of Sun Salutation (Surya Pranam) a yoga asana that extends gratitude through your body, cells and breath for receiving Sun Light as the source of life.

Yoga – Union of mind, body and spirit.  Begin by the awareness of the interplay between your mind, body and spirit.
Asana – Posture of attitude and body through stillness.

Check in with your attitude during the day and notice the impact it has on your outlook to life. Notice where you are blocking the flow of life energy through following your attitude:
2 Skepticism
2 Resentment
2 Ungratefulness
2 Doubt

Awareness is the first step.  Is there a way you can relax the fixed posture and soften the attitude?

Forgive yourself for blocking the flow in your life and open up to…
2 Trust
2 Acceptance
2 Love
2 Gratitude

Look for small things in life you are grateful for and begin to explore the web-strings that have brought these treasures to you.  Open up to the receiving and show your gratitude for life, sight, touch, smell, connection, beauty, light, love and intelligence.

Your body follows the rhythm of ebb and flow.  Both emptiness and fullness are essential for a constant flow.
As you continue to practice receiving from the Sun light, you will begin to experience nature’s beauty and bounty, followed with a heartfelt smile form a fellow human, love, support and through the connection of love, you will gain inner wisdom, intuition and even enlightenment.

It is all available to you in this moment by opening up to receiving.

Q: How does organizing towards what we are becoming help one be more resilient?
A: The mind needs tools, concepts and theories... as long as the tools do not become a source of distractions or entertainment for the mind we tap into our very nature of resilience.
The practice opens the window to the wholeness and who we are. It is about being comfortable with our wholeness and the practice is no other than moment by moment conscious awareness. Breath is the door to awareness, emotional resistance is the alarm exposing the underlying mental models and resilience is the gift of freedom that is born from the dance of chaos and order.

Thought for the Day

“The leaders I met, whatever walk of life they were from, whatever institutions they were presiding over, always referred back to the same failure something that happened to them that was personally difficult, even traumatic, something that made them feel that desperate sense of hitting bottom--as something they thought was almost a necessity. It's as if at that moment the iron entered their soul; that moment created the resilience that leaders need.”
